Hanes is considered one the very best manufacturers of t-shirts, sweatshirts and polo shirts in the United States. Kustom Imprint is one of Hanes largest customers and has screen printed and embroidered thousands and thousands of Hanes apparel over the years Since Hanes has been so integral in the history of our industry, we thought you would find it interesting to know a detailed version of their history.

1901

P.H. Hanes Knitting Company founded as a manufacturer of men’s underwear.

1970's

In the mid 70’s, executives at Hanes Knitting discovered that their white underwear product were being screenprinted and worn as outerwear. Keith Alms of Hanes Knitwear believed there was a viable business in selling white underwear T-shirts to screenprinters. He developed the Hanes 5000 line of T-shirts and began selling to individual screenprinters.

1975

Hanes introduces a roomier, heavier-weight T-shirt, called the Hanes Beefy-T®, specifically for the screenprint industry. Later that same year, Hanes develops the "screenprinter fold" eliminating the additional cost and handling of individual packaging.

1980

Hanes Printables becomes a separate division of Hanes Knitwear dedicated to manufacturing and distributing imprintable T-shirts and other apparel. Hanes Knitwear is part of Sara Lee Corporation's family of branded consumer products companies.

1983-85

Sportshirts and Fleece added to the existing line of long and short sleeve T-shirts.

1989

Hanes Printables acquires Stedman® T-shirts and sportshirts.

1996

As a major sponsor of the Atlanta Olympics, Hanes produces a one-of-a-kind series of Hanes Beefy T-shirts representing the 500 days leading up to the Opening Ceremonies. T-shirt #1 was auctioned for $32,500 which went to purchasing Olympic Game tickets for underprivileged children.

1997

Hanes PrintPro® Fleece wins the prestigious Silver Edison Best New Product Award for its revolutionary, patented high stitch density fabric.

1999

Hanes introduces the Soft L’ink® T-shirt with a patent-pending fabrication of 100% micro-polyester exterior and 100% ring-spun cotton interior. The Soft L’ink T-shirt was developed specifically for dye-sublimation transfer printing while maintaining the soft comfort of cotton.

1999

Hanes Printables acquires Outer Banks®, a leading manufacturer of sportshirts.

2000

The Hanes Beefy-T turns 25! Today, printed T-shirts are more popular than ever; research indicates that an average of four T-shirts are purchased each year by individuals 16 years and older.

2001

The 1 billionth Hanes Beefy-T T-shirt is sold! Hanes celebrates with the imprintables industry and a “Beefy-T” PT Cruiser sweepstakes.

2002

Hanes Printables introduces Beefy Silver®, a men’s T-shirt made from its signature blend of cotton and eucalyptus-derived Nativa™ rayon, producing a soft, silky alternative to standard cotton T-shirts.

1989

Hanes Printables acquires Stedman® T-shirts and sportshirts.

2003

Hanes Printables introduces Silver for Her®, a women’s collection of versatile and stylish tops designed specifically for resort, retail and corporate customers.

2004

Hanes Printables introduces Hanes StayClean® Sportshirts, a patent-pending stain repel and release protection system for knits.

2004

Hanes Printables introduces a “Go Tagless” Hanes Authentic T-shirt. Say ‘Goodbye’ to irritating neck labels and ‘Hello’ to ultimate comfort. No more itchy, scratchy tags.

2006

Hanesbrands Inc. a leading marketer of innerwear, outerwear and hosiery apparel completed its spin-off as an independent company from Sara Lee Corporation on September 6, 2006.
