A rhinestone is a piece of crystal, cut in facets, with a mirror backing. The lucidity of the crystal combined with the mirror backing creates a sparkling presentation, so rhinestones sparkle whenhit with light. A rhinestud is not crystal, but metallic and made to resemble a rhinestone. The metallic finish makes them shine similar to rhinestones however they are not as brilliant they do not refract light in the same way. A rhinestud is sort of a matte version of a rhinestone.
